Being a senior citizen means having all sorts of benefits like special discounts, preferential seating, and so on. What it doesn’t mean is that you’re doomed to an inactive life! You may have some medical conditions to manage, travel limitations to consider, or you might just be having trouble finding a group to have fun with, but don’t be discouraged. A report done by the Surgeon General shows that even just mild physical activity and social interaction can have positive effects on your well-being. Going for a walk, managing your garden, and seeking support from your family, neighbors, and friends are all ways to improve and maintain your mood, stamina, and strength.
Health Services of North Texas has worked with many senior volunteers who help keep things running at our offices and at the many events we participate in. For example, Nancy Gaige, age 75, has volunteered with HSNT for six years, working at the headquarters building and at events, as well. Despite her age, Nancy knows that she can make just as much of an impact on her community as her fellow younger volunteers can.
“I’m very fortunate in that I can afford the healthcare I need, but I know that’s not true for everyone. So I’m glad to maybe make just a little dent in helping people who need it. That’s the main thing I get – giving something back.”
Denton has many ways for senior citizens to stay active and involved. Feeling adventurous? Adults age 50 and older can participate in outdoor recreation activities coordinated by the Denton Senior Center. Feeling the groove? Friday Night Dances are hosted at the Denton Senior Center as well, every second and fourth Friday of the month. There are all sorts of ways to be a healthy and active senior citizen, and HSNT is here to celebrate that fact for National Senior Citizen Day.
